Prepare your home for retirement. Learn more at our Penn Hills school or online.

Use these ideas to create your own checklist for getting your home in order:

*Walk through your home and around your property. Create a list of repairs or upgrades that need done.

Things like starting a garden can be done in retirement. A buckling retaining wall should be repaired prior to retirement.

*Have appropriate warning devices installed.

Example: Carbon monoxide / fire alarms

*Are there enough easy to use fire extinguishers in your home?

*Make sure you have money set aside for home emergencies.

*Have your air and water quality tested. If you have less than perfect water and air quality buy the appropriate filters.

Smoke, dust, pollen mold spores, bacteria, and other toxins are all harmful to your quality of health.

*Install the highest rated filters on your furnace.

*Create a preventative maintenance plan.

Have the furnace and air conditioning cleaned and checked every year. Change sweeper, water, air, furnace,

other filters regularly. Plan for getting the gutters cleaned out, weeds and overgrowth removed, mold cleaned off

of house and roof, drainage pipes unclogged from vegetative growth, etc.

*List devices that can help you move around the house more safely.

Garage door openers, anti slip tape on outdoor steps, etc.

*Look at your furniture.

Does the furniture you have now provide the right kind of support for old age? The couch that you sink into

may be very difficult to get out of when you are older.
