BOWMAN'S MONEY COLLEGE - FINANCIAL EDUCATION WITH STRATEGIES TO SAVE MONEY

Financial freedom buried in a ball of ice?

financial challenges, achieve financial freedom, how to achieve financial freedomFebruary 2010 in Pittsburgh gave residents a particularly memorable slew of winter storms. First there was an unusual amount of snow that built up quickly and it dramatically slowed things down. Then people ran into the problem of excessive ice building up on roofs and gutters. I found myself facing the predicament of home damage if something wasn’t done about the ice. Armed with a long ice chopper I climbed up a ladder toward the roof.

There was a giant mound of ice about 5 feet long and 2 feet high that had grown around the down spout and onto the roof and siding. It seemed impossible to break off the house. I spent about 20 minutes hacking at the ice and seemed to be making very little progress.

I was a little caught off guard when on my last swipe the entire chunk of ice broke in half all at once and was free of the siding and down spout. This reminded me of people I’ve worked with that struggled with goals for the longest time. They kept hacking away at their financial goals and it seemed like they weren’t making much progress. However, there is something else happening that you may not immediately see.

As I kept striking the miniature iceberg I didn’t see the stress fractures forming throughout the ice which was making it weaker and more susceptible to a final dramatic break. A related effect happens when you work hard on your financial goals. On the surface it may not always look like you are making dramatic progress as you sweat and toil to pay off debt. However, the experience, knowledge, and ideas you are gaining by doing the work strengthen you with each task. Before, you weren’t much of a match for all the debt and hardships, but now you are very strong and capable of easily crushing financial challenges.
