BOWMAN'S MONEY COLLEGE - FINANCIAL EDUCATION WITH STRATEGIES TO SAVE MONEY

Sewer backups are most likely not covered by your insurance

Most insurance does not cover sewer backups. It is an additional amount of insurance you can buy as an endorsement to your home owner’s policy. Here is why to consider it.A recent story on Channel 4 Action News in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania documented the plight of a woman who called the Allegheny County Health Department to report sewage backing up into her Hill District apartment. The story detailed her trouble getting help with the problem. However, there is another part of the story that this Hill District resident now has to deal with. Cleaning up the damage will be a huge undertaking.

Unfortunately, damage done by sewer backups can be extensive enough that a professional cleanup crew may need to be brought in. That is when 2 things happen. First, most people will call their home insurance agent to file a claim, and then secondly, they discover that sewer backups are not covered under most home owner’s insurance.

Coverage for sewer backups is an additional amount of insurance you can buy as an endorsement to your home owner’s policy. Depending on the usual factors of your deductible and coverage amount you may have to pay an additional $50.00 to $100.00 per year. Be sure to check your home owner’s policy and understand what is and is not covered.

For those living in apartments renter’s insurance would cover the replacement of your belongings, but not the clean up needed as a result of a sewage backup. If you are a renter consider asking your landlord if the building you live in is covered in the event of sewer backups.
