How would you like to save a lot of money AND support a great charitable
cause at the same time? This month the Boy Scouts will be collecting food
for the Scouting For Food campaign; using coupons and sales will allow
you to buy enough food for
you AND the Scouts for very little. You will
find out how in this article! According to the Boy Scouts website
the Boy Scouts have been collecting and even growing food for the needy
since 1910. I was interested to find out that during World War 1 the Boy
Scouts were growing "Victory Gardens" in order to provide food to the
needy!
Here are some facts from the
scouts' website
about this program:
-During April
1-30 the Greater Pittsburgh Council, Boy Scouts of America, in partnership
with the United Way of Southwestern Pennsylvania, will conduct its 19th
annual Scouting for Food program.
-Since 1987, over
67 million units of food have been collected and distributed to community
food banks.
-Each year
Scouting for Food mobilizes community businesses and organizations
and focuses the resources of more than 300,000 people to collect food for
120,000 hungry people throughout southwestern Pennsylvania.
Karl Boroski, District Director,
for the Boy Scouts, says the organization, which includes Troop 139, plans
on collecting nearly $6 million in food donations by April 24! Troop 139 is the local Boy Scout troop
for Verona / Penn Hills. They posted a notice on
YourPennHills.com telling us that they would be passing out
bags in the neighborhood for us to place our food donations in. Wouldn't
it be great to support the scouts in this endeavor? What if you could make
a difference for someone in your community and learn how to save money at
the same time? That is my goal.
We already know that you can save
money with coupons. Actually, we have discovered on this site you can save
a ton of money by managing your coupons, rebates,
catalinas, and sales! There are so
many great deals to be had out there why not leverage that into even more
donations for the Boy Scouts' Scouting For Food campaign? We have until
the collection date of April 24 to collect our donations. Healthy foods
and household goods are preferred. The scouts ask that no glass containers
be donated.
Listed below you will find how I
have been collecting food and household goods to give away. As you can see
you can buy food and other household goods for a fraction of the retail
price. Here is how I am doing so far; we still have time to collect, so what deals can you find this week?
